Rev. Dr. Barbara Merritt
Rev. Barbara Merritt was the 10th Minister of the First Unitarian Church, serving as Senior Minister from 1983 to 2010. She was designated Minister Emerita upon her retirement, in recognition of the deep respect and affection with which she is held by the congregation. Her spiritual leadership has been inspiring to all.
A life-long Unitarian, she majored in Philosophy and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas in 1971. She prepared for the Unitarian Ministry at the Starr King School for the Ministry, receiving a Master’s in Divinity in 1975. She was ordained to the ministry in 1975, and served in Woodstock, Illinois until 1983.
She has been awarded honorary doctorates from the Starr King School for the Ministry and Assumption College, here in Worcester.
Rev. Merritt is married to Jeffrey Merritt, a physics teacher; they have two grown sons.
